In 1994 Senator Joe Biden told reporter Charlie Rose “If Haiti —a God-awful thing to say — if Haiti just quietly sunk into the Caribbean or rose up 300 feet, it wouldn’t matter a whole lot in terms of our interest.”
Fast forward to today. Haiti is in the midst of a huge humanitarian crisis. Thousands of Haitians have made their way into Mexico in a desperate attempt to enter the US along the southern border. And the Biden Administration responds by nearly doubling deportations of Haitians back to Haiti.
That’s right. Haitians are fleeing their country after a presidential assassination, a deadly earthquake, flooding, violent gangs and warlords seizing territory, and rapidly growing food shortages. They are desperate for help. And the Biden Administration is going to be sending them back to Haiti.
Two weeks after abandoning Afghanistan to the Taliban, Biden is sending the country $64 million in humanitarian aid. Yet Biden is responding to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti and thousands of Haitians attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico by doubling the number of Haitians being deported back to Haiti.
