Remember when Biden loudly and defiantly declared that he would eliminate Trump’s border policies as soon as he became president? During the campaign Biden declared those policies “inhumane”, and accused the Trump administration of forcing asylum applicants to live “in squalor.”
Well, Biden it seems changed his mind soon after assuming office.
First, a caravan of over 8,000 thousand migrant workers from Honduras which formed in early January, was stopped by security forces in Guatemala. The majority of the members were returned to Honduras right around Inauguration Day. However, a new caravan with thousands more migrant workers quickly formed and began moving toward the US southern border.
This when Biden changed his mind and decided to leave the Trump-era border policies in place (at least for now). The policies in question would block migrants (many of which are asylum seekers) from entering the US, forcing them to live in Mexico until their asylum claims are processed.
But the thing is, there are already thousands of asylum seekers living in camps in Mexico on the US border. Some of them have been there for well over a year, waiting for their asylum claims to be processed. This was mainly due to CDC restrictions put in place because of COVID 19, severely limiting the number of asylum cases being reviewed.
Meanwhile, Biden’s administration is continuing to use Trump-era CDC orders to quickly expel migrants (including families with children) without even allowing them to request U.S. refuge status, according to court documents and interviews with attorneys. The new administration has also not said whether it will allow the estimated 20,000 migrants in Mexico with pending asylum applications to continue their cases inside the U.S.
Of course, this is in stark contrast to the amnesty and a path to citizenship being granted to the millions of immigrants that are already here in the US illegally.
Why is it that people who obey the law are made to suffer, while those who violate the law are rewarded? People who applied for asylum legally are forced to live in squalor, in dangerous camps along the border, while those that entered the US illegally are granted legal status and a path to citizenship.
How is it a man who represents a party that supports open borders, can then leave in place policies which prevent asylum seekers from entering our country, and allows for the expulsion of migrants (including families with children) without even allowing them to request U.S. refuge status,
If you opposed the immigration policies in place under Trump, and voted for Biden because of his promises to immediately end those policies, why aren’t you angry he is choosing to leave them in place?
